Billy Budd, Chapter 12

Posted by Mummy Dearest on Jul-21-2004

Yesterday afternoon, the children and I hung up spirals of fly paper in the kitchen, as part of our continuing campaign to rid the kitchen of flies before we leave.

During dinner, The Boy pointed the strips out to The Father and then asked me a hypothetical question : if you had a really big strip- say, as wide as the window- could you catch the cat ? Would it be strong enough to lift her off of the ground ? Taking a sip of water, I said that I didn’t know for sure, but it certainly would make a mess of her fur. They are really sticky, I told him. How does it kill the flies, he asked, the edges of his face beginning to crumple in sympathy , does it starve them to death ?

I looked him straight in the eye and told him that we were not going to have this conversation. When we come back from America, I said, we can talk about this. Right now, Boy, my major concern is for the cat. We can feel sorry for the flies later.

    *Smiling*

Sometimes I think children put up very large strips of invisible flypaper to catch their parents.
