Sweet Home Alabama

Posted by Mummy Dearest on May-29-2008

It seems that we shall never go to Alabama again. This has been a great shock to the children and I.

No more days at Smith Lake, no more Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Patsy.

My father is selling his home and plans to move to Texas, of all places ( Re: Bush), to a, oh, retirement community for military officers.

He has sent me a bunch of things from the old homestead, which I still have not seen- time, you know.

He sold all of his gold jewelry, including the I.D. bracelet he promised to The Boy.

Speaking of The Boy, he did not receive a birthday card this year from his Grandpa, nor was a deposit made in our joint account. I gave The Boy 50 Euro and said that it was from Grandpa and Grandma.

I have no idea what is going on with him, but I do know this : never again shall we share the same house during the sultry months of summer in Alabama.

I have always been able to go home again, contrary to popular belief. And now, that is over.

The children and I all wish that we had known that last year was our last time there, so that we could have said goodbye to all of the things that we came to love about Alabama, the rolling hills, the kindly people, making puzzles together while Grandpa napped.

I suspect that I am on Grandpa’s shit list.

Do I care ?

Not one bit. He did not send my boy a birthday card. Small minded, I know, but such am I.

  1. jo Said,

Oh sue! I remember the feeling when all my family sold off childhood homes and went on. It is strange to not be able to go ‘home again’. Good of you to do what you did though, even if grandpa is being a shit. It shouldn’t matter how he feels about you or your situation, kids are another story entirely.

  2. Catherine Said,

I’m sorry, how bewildering parents can be. Is his wife off to Texas too?

Great to see you back. Very glad that The Girl is feeling better.

  3. sue Said,

Jo, I’m glad that I found you again !

AS you may or may not know, I lost my site but found a great guy who brought it back.

Now, if I can just figure out how to change it….

As for Dad, hey, he has a daughter and grandkids who love him. If wants to toss that aside, that is his choice.

  4. sue Said,

Catherine, she is much, much better. While she is still in love with Jimmy Dean, that whole group was a very bad thing for her.

Yup, they are both going to Texas ( I am sorry, but I have to say it : of all places ?)

Needles to say, after all of these years, being *back* at my Kitchen is another burden off of my shoulders.

Now if I could just figure out how to do that blogroll thing- for I have lost contact with Karan as well.

Eh, One step at a time, I suppose-

And shall we go for a little Elvis, for you, Jo and Karan and many other people? * You were always on my mind…..*

  5. Mary Curtin Said,

Welcome back, Sue! I knew you’d return when I saw the pictures of the dogs!

Sorry life is being so stressful for you right now but keep smiling – it’ll get better!

  6. sue Said,

    Hi Mary,

jeepers creepers, I have missed everyone !

Then again, I have chosen not to let Google search me, haven’t I ?

Just have to figure out that blogroll thing, and I can catch up on everyone.

    Best to you-
